FAQ

What genres do you work with?

I specialize in fantasy and science fiction, for young adult, new adult, and adult. Contemporary, historical, epic, steampunk, space travel, fairy tale, dystopian—I love it all. But if your novel is in a different genre and you would like to work with me, please contact me. We can see if we would be a good fit. More than anything, I want to make sure I can do your book justice! I don’t work with memoir, horror, or erotica, as these genres are not my areas of expertise. I do not take on any manuscripts glorifying racism, misogyny, ableism, or any other kind of prejudice.

What software do you use?

I work in Microsoft Word, using Track Changes. I will not be able to accept manuscripts in Scrivener or Pages or Google Docs. The only exception is if you need a final proofread on an already formatted novel, in which case I would be happy to edit a PDF in Adobe.

When will I get my manuscript back?

It depends on the length of your novel and the complexity of the edit. Generally, once I have you booked into my schedule, turnaround is two to six weeks after I’ve received your manuscript. I will quote you an exact time frame in my proposal. If you have a specific deadline you are working with, please let me know ahead of time, and I can see if my schedule will allow me to match yours.

How does payment work?

Once we’ve come to an agreement on project terms, I will send over a contract for you to sign. I require 50% of your total bill before work can begin, and I will send you an invoice through PayPal or Stripe. The remainder is due on completion of the project. I will keep you apprised of my progress throughout my edit, so you know the work will be done within our agreed-upon time frame.

Do you have payment plans?

Yes, I do! I understand that money can be tight, and I would like to work within your budget as much as I am able to. Contact me to see what options for installment plans I offer.

What if I disagree with your suggestions?

It is your book! You may reject any changes you disagree with. I will suggest corrections and revisions I think may benefit your project and your readers, but at the end of the day, you know your vision for your work. And I am here for questions and follow-up if you want to talk.

What if I want more help?

If you would like me to perform a second edit on the same novel, I offer a discount, as my work will genuinely be easier. For example, you hire me to do a developmental edit. Then, after you’ve revised your manuscript, you decide on a line edit, to fine-tune the prose. On any manuscripts I’ve already worked on, I offer a 10% discount.

Can you help me find an agent or get published?

That is outside the scope of what I do; marketing and sales are not my area of expertise. Instead, I will do my best to help you with what I am an expert in: getting your manuscript into the best shape it can be for that next step.
